Our First Home

For our weekly meme "So We Don't Forget", our host Lynnette has asked us to write about our first home after we were married. You can link to Lynnette's blog Dancing Barefoot on Weathered Ground and join in or read other blog posts on this topic.

Greg and I will be married 25 years on November 3rd of this year. When we dated and got married, we each owned our own place. After all, I was 31 and he was 35 at the time. I ended up renting out my place and moved into his two bedroom patio home. This is the front entrance. We had to have the iron bars put on the windows because we were burglarized once when we were both at work. It wasn't the best neighborhood in Phoenix.

Greg's taste in decorating was much more contemporary than mine. I had more of a country French look. But we hadn't planned on living here too long so I tried to add some feminine touches. Little did I know that it would end up being 14 years! LOL.

Since the place was fairly small at 1400 square feet, we used lots of mirrors to give the appearance of being larger. Here is the dining room, which we hardly ever used. Some things never change as we never use our dining room in our home now.

And this was our kitchen. I well remember a hummingbird who built her nest right outside my kitchen window. We didn't want to come in the front door because we didn't want to disturb her little babies. But we got a ringside spot watching her as she fed them.

Everything was done in light colors to also help it appear larger. This was our bedroom with built in dressers which made it very convenient.

And finally, this was our office that we both shared. We were even able to fit our treadmill in this small room because we both used it on a regular basis. That is when we weren't outside riding bikes or running the canals in Phoenix. Hmm ...come to think of it, we used to take 25 mile bike rides during the weekend. Haven't done that since we moved!

I hope you enjoyed the tour of Greg and my first home. We had many good memories but have even better ones now.

  1. Thanks for sharing your precious memories with us and CONGRATS on 25years of marriage!

We also don't use our dining room...what's with that?
I guess our generation is more casual as a rule.

Well, I was just thinking about converting our dining room into a sitting area since it's located right outside our bedroom. Probably too big a project!

    Blessings this week and always~

  6. Awww..thanks for sharing Debbie :)

Our first place was TINY. We were still in college when we got married and we lived in a flat on campus that was 800 square feet - if that! LOL. It didn't take us long to move into a larger apartment. Good memories :) Thanks for bringing them to mind!

I hope you are having a nice week, friend :)

    Hugs,
    Kate :)

  8. Dear Debbie,
I like your fist home. It has class and taste written all over it.
    So neat and well groomed.
No wonder you stayed there for fourteen years.
I actually think Americans are more formal when it comes to interior decorating than Europeans.
Our dining table is placed in the library and is mostly decorated with books or work under construction.
But then we have a large table for 6 or 8 in the kitchen.
I like to serve what we call a "standing buffet" when we have invited many guests.
That is lots of plates with fish, shrimp, warm and cold meat, various salads, vegetables, fruits, placed on our kitchen table. The guests may fetch whatever is to their liking
for how many times they feel like. Dessert, coffee and cakes are served in what we call the salon.
I therefor hate the stamp like, modern coffee tables where one cannot lay a proper "coffee dish" for a small party, (I cannot even find an English word for serving coffee and cakes in a sofa and table setting). You've been in Norway and sure know what I'm trying to say.

    Hmm.
Far away from your first home.
I like it, and I'm sure you spent 14 happy years there.
Congratulation with your forthcoming silver jubilee.
We have been married for 21 years and are still a work under construction.
Who would have thought that marriage was such fun and such a developing challenge as well.

  10. How fun to see pictures of your first home. Definitely contemporary - most men seem to go for that huh? Pretty nice though.

I'll have to scroll through and see if you have any picture of your current home. Maybe I'll do a blog party and have people show pictures of their homes. That sounds fun. Yeah, I think I'll do that.

    Thanks for sharing your memories!
    Love,
    Lynnette
