Five Minute Friday ~ What Mama Did

It's Five Minute Friday when I link up with The Gypsy Mama.  Lisa-Jo gives us a prompt and we get to write for five minutes flat.  This week our prompt is:

What did your mama do that makes her your mama?

GO

It was eight years ago yesterday since my mom died.  At times it seems like it was only yesterday and other days it seems like a long time ago.

When I think of my mom I think of laughter.  No matter how much pain my mom was in she always found something to laugh about. She always had a joke to share and never wanted her pain to be the center of attention.  She was not afraid of being seen as silly.  I couldn't help but join in on her laughter.

But the thing I remember most about my mama was how she listened.  She was always available to stop what she was doing to sit down and talk.  I talked to my mom about everything.

As a child, she was with me as I went through open heart surgery. We waited together in clinics that took all day long.  And we talked and talked.

As a teenager, she listened to me talk about boys.  She gave advice when asked.  She never tried to cut me off or think I was silly.  She listened and I always knew she would make time for me.

As an adult, she listened.  We talked about our faith, life, family. She listened when I was heart broken when I was unable to have children.  She knew how much I'd wanted a family.  Even when she was in such pain, she walked up the stairs in my home to comfort me when she knew I was hurting.

I miss my mom.  But I have to say that I am comforted to know that one day I will see her again.  You see we shared our faith in Jesus.  And that is what makes it bearable.

STOP

Blessings and love,

  1. Debbie, what a beautiful testimony this is about your mother. I am so sorry that you no longer have her around, but she has built an amazing legacy into your life. What an example for us all. Thank you so much for sharing these memories. It was a true blessing for me to be your neighbor this morning at Lisa-Jo's. I hope you find joy today in these thoughts that have been brought to mind.

  3. Debbie- my heart aches when I think of those people in my life whose moms aren't here, but there something like joy that I feel when I see just how they carry their mothers with them and in them, especially in a way that reflects the comfort and love of Christ. I am so happy I was able to read your post- it was a blessing.

  4. What a beautiful tribute to your beautiful Mom, Debbie. Such a gift to have someone who truly listens to our hearts & is silly, too!
My Mom is still here but when my Dad passed, I , too, found such solace knowing that right where he is God is and right where I am God is. We can never be a part.

  6. Ah, Debbie this was beautiful, as your heart, faith and strength to persevere with a Christ centric focus on life. Mom's are special, mine to me as yours was to you. I pray for my nieces who lost their Mom (my little sister) 5 years ago while they were still High School, that the Lord take care of them as he has you. Peace and Prayers

  7. Oh my goodness, Debbie, this sounds exactly like my mother--I think they must have been sisters.

  8. Hi Debbie, I too lost my mother in February, but just 3 years ago. I have been thinking of her a lot lately as one might expect and the wounds surrounding her departure are still very fresh to me. But also like you and your mom, My mom and I shared a common love for the Lord, and I am confident we will meet again in our heavenly home. May your memories be a comfort as well your hope. God bless, Maria

  10. Dear Wendy
Oh, the joy of knowing that your mom is waiting for you and that you will see one another once again. And this time she won't have any pain. I never had such a relationship with my mom, but I know that she loves me as best as she is able to and that is enough.
    Much love
    Mia

  11. She was a wonderful example to you concerning the important things of life; your faith, listening, being in the moment with you. Sounds like she gave you a good foundation for the wonderful person you are today...

I know it's such a comfort to you to know that you will see her again and the two of you will be able to have those long talks once again....

  15. I was surprised to find out that so many of my friends didn't have a mom who would listen to them, love them, or encourage them! They were not close to their moms...and I just can't imagine that! My mom was so wonderful, and we were so very close! I count it a blessing to have had such a loving Christian mother, and I am glad that you did too. Yes...we have the blessed assurance that we will see them again!
