Phoenix in October

All across the blog world, I read posts about the fall season.  Typically October brings cooler temperatures,  a time to unpack sweaters, changing colors on the leaves of the trees and crisp cool evenings.

But what happens if you live in Phoenix, Arizona?

The average temperatures for October in Phoenix are 86 for the high and 63 for the low.  According to the Arizona Republic, today's temperature should hit a HOT 96 degrees!  Can you believe that?

This is the time of year when I miss the fall season.  So, I tend to linger over photos of pumpkins and imagine taking long walks in the crisp cool air.

And then I remember that winter is coming and for Phoenix ...that's our fall season.

When the rest of the country braces for the cold, I love to go for long walks in the crisp air and hike in the mountains.

I pull out  my copy of Backroads & Byways of Arizona by Jackie Dishner and plan a day trip.

Flagstaff is only a two hour drive from Phoenix.  With the higher altitude, the temperatures are much cooler.  And I get to see ...the fall colors.

Jackie Dishner loves Arizona!  As the author of Backroads & Byways of Arizona, she shares ways to enjoy the outdoors through adventures and day trips.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jackie in person when she signed my copy of this book.  And let me tell you, I really like her.  We hope to get together again in the near future to go for a hike or to simply sit and chat over a cup of coffee.  She's that kind of gal!
Me and Jackie Dishner
Although Jackie never asked me to review or promote her book, I want to recommend it.  Who should buy this book?
  • If you are planning a trip to Arizona
  • If you live in the Phoenix area and enjoy finding new places to discover
  • If you love the outdoors and are adventuresome
  • If you live in the southwest and enjoy taking day trips or weekend excursions
You won't be disappointed!

So, what's it like in October where you live?  What kinds of activities do you enjoy this time of year?

Blessings and love,

  1. I'll have to pick up a copy of that book for my dad. He used to have a subscription to Arizona Highways and we kept those for years like most people keep National Geographics. When we lived in Gulf Shores we never had fall either.

Yesterday I went walking and took pictures of the trees and leaves. We are planning a wedding at our house in 3 weeks and trying not to overdo the fall decorations.

  2. Debbie,

Looks like a great book. Would love to visit Arizona this winter, but I think it will have to wait. We were there May, 2006 with my husband. It was quite a memorable trip. Loved the beauty of God's creation. Trust the Lord is blessing you and your husband. Sorry I have not visited much recently. I've been in an incubation period of my life.

    Blessings,
    Patricia

  3. There is one thing I like about the UK - we get four seasons! Though sometimes all four can be pretty wet! I have a big orange pumpkin in my veg patch in the garden and the trees are all just starting to turn - beautiful.

  4. Love, love, love Fall in Phoenix!

What else do I enjoy? Thinking about friends who are thinking about Fall too.

From the beauty of Washington's Fall I send hugs,

  5. I, too, love Flagstaff. It's beautiful there.

I'm already thinking about the leaves that will soon fall and need raking. :) That's how I spend my late October afternoons. Funny, it's a blister inducing chore, yet I love to be outside watching the neighbor kids playing and listening to the laughter.

  6. I've never been to Arizona but
friends tell me it's a beautiful
place. I am blessed to live in
this part of N.C. though where
we drive the Blue Ridge Parkway
and see the most beautiful fall
    colors imaginable. Tourists come
from all over the country just
to view the fall colors here.
    Totally off subject,but looking
at your picture today I decided
your lovely face is a cross between
    Olivia Newton-John and Hayley
Mills. You're so cute! There now,
bet that just made your day! Ha!
    Hugs,
    Sandy

  7. October in our mountains is what I would call a typical fall. The trees change colors, the air is crisp, the leaves crunch under my feet.

I love to be outside in the fall. I enjoy making hot apple cider, decorating with pumpkins and mums, and eating the occasional caramel apple! ;-)

  9. We don't get much of a Fall in California either of course. But as hot as it sometimes gets during the day, you know it's Fall as the nights cool WAY down. It's actually raining right now and only about 63 and I LOVE it. Makes me want to bake and curl up with a good book. Have a good day Debbie. HUGS, Debbie

  11. We don't get the Fall in Texas either, not like up north, but our temps are cooler now and the days have a crisp edge at least in the morning. It's such a beautiful time of year. I hope Arizona temps go down a little bit in the coming days. You are right though, the rest of the country will be jealous when December and January roll around and you are loving your Fall!

    Love you!

  12. I've been to many states, but never Arizona, and I would love to go--preferably when it's brutal winter here in Northern Illinois!

Thanks for commenting on my blog, Debbie!

  13. We do have variety in the USA, don't we? I love the changes of the seasons, but I do not like driving on slippery, snowy roads and do not usually have to do that too much, since I do not work away from home. I remember visiting my mom in the fall and winter in AZ and the warmth was so nice, even though to her it was too chilly. But I know I would miss fall especially, so I am happy that God put us here in MT.

The book sounds very good, and I am glad that you will have fall temps and be able to go hiking then. Until then, keep cool!

    Love and blessings,
    Laurie

  14. I was just thinking of you and Kristin the other day and wondering about the weather. Today in CA Fall has finally hit. It's cooler out and my bare feet are cold. Missing my time in Arizona. Wanting to come for a visit.

  15. Beautiful pics Debbie! We don't see such gorgeous colours up here in the tropics of North Queensland. All we see is green, green, green, all year round! A deep, lush green. Sigh. I can live with that lol.

    Bless you sweet sister xoxox

  16. I can NOT imagine 90 in October, that simply blows my mind!
I'm a Minnesota girl, we know cold here. And we are lucky if we get 10 days all summer in teh 90's. hee hee.
Someday I will have to branch out and see the southwest!

  17. I enjoy fall festivals, and the beautiful colors.

  18. It's still hot here, although today we dipped down into the 70's. We don't have much of a fall here... from 90 to 70 in a second flat, and then onto colder weather. As for me, I'd love a December in the 60's! Fall is my favorite season of the year. I hate to see it slip so quickly.

I did manage to find my fall wreaths and flags. Made hubby put them out last evening. We're still uncovering from our move in June, but I was glad to be able to have my wreaths come with me. Next stop... Christmas. Oh the thought of it makes me shudder!

    Loved visiting with you today.

Hubby and I came to Arizona about 8 years ago, the Sedona area, and loved it. Some very fine artisans there.

Love your fall pictures and look forward to counting you as another of my wonderful "blogging friends."

    Abundant blessings to you!

  21. This is my favorite time of the year. It is so beautiful in PA! The leaves are changing and falling... the air is cool and crisp. I love it here... Now when we are having freezing temps and snow, and you are having sunny, 76 degrees in Jan. and Feb. I will think of AZ!

    Love you dear friend.
