Thankful Thursday ~ The Voice of God

Today is Thankful Thursday and Lynn of Spiritually Unequal Marriage is hosting. She has chosen the theme of discerning the voice of God. You can read other posts on this topic by linking there.

When I checked Lynn's blog to discover what the theme would be I was taken back. You see, I just had a conversation with my friend Helen yesterday about this very topic. So, I guess it was perfect timing to write about this today.

I'm so thankful that as a child of God, He hasn't left me alone in this world to figure things out by myself. The Bible is His inspired word that teaches me how to live and love. He speaks to me through His Word. I've had times when a particular verse of Scripture practically leaps off the page even though I may have read it many times before.

Sometimes I've heard people say God told them to do something and yet it directly contradicts what is written in the Bible. I don't believe them because He doesn't contradict Himself.

I think the biggest barrier to hearing the voice of God is ...not listening and instead being so distracted with things of this world. If I don't take the time to spend with the Lord in prayer and reading the Bible, how can I expect to hear from Him?

Another obstacle is not obeying what God's already told me to do. When I disregard what He's already said, it's called disobedience (or sin). So, how can I expect Him to speak to me about something else in my life? Sin interferes with my intimacy with God.

I don't pretend to have all the answers about hearing from God. There have been times when I haven't been able to hear from God. I need to remember that I don't live a life of faith by my feelings. I know in my heart that God has never left me and I still believe even when ...I don't hear His voice clearly.

On this thankful Thursday, I'm so thankful that I have a personal relationship with God through Jesus. I can walk by faith knowing that He loves me and cares about my life. How awesome is that?

  3. I try very hard to hear him as well. Sometimes when I stop trying that's when I hear him. :)

  4. i think disobedience causes your spiritual ear to lose it's sense of hearing (from God). even if we don't feel like it or it doesn't make sense at all, when God tells us to do something, we should obey. love this post! God bless.

  8. Not long ago my 15 year old son and I were having a conversation about knowing what God wants of us and listening to Him. He said "it would just be easier if He would talk to us in a real voice like other people!" I agree. Sometimes I wish He would too, but the closer we are to the Lord, the more we are able to recognize His voice whether through scripture or through the guiding of the Holy Spirit. It's like Jesus says in the Bible: "My sheep know my voice."

  9. I love this line:

"I need to remember that I don't live a life of faith by my feelings."

    Amen! Have a wonderful day!

  10. I find the only way to hear God is in humility. You can't listen if you are not in a state of 'readiness' to listen. We are in control of our own 'worlds' - if we get distracted it is because we allow it. But if we create a place of 'quietness' in our worlds that we can return to over and over again it will be easier to listen. Practise makes perfect.
    Thanks for the post.

  11. It's funny how you can be talking about something and next thing you know, it then shows up everywhere. For you, TT, for me, in something I was reading this morning - a list of how we can get so busy doing and not hearing, so focused on the "faith walk," that we don't hear the "faith talk."
Hm.......God must be trying to tell me something.

  14. Delighted to meet you! Just found your blog and lovin' every syllable. I continue to be amazed at the faith and encouragement I find wrapped in the words I read. Also delighted because you live in my hometown! We're here for just a bit before heading back to the mission field next week. Keep shining, the sun may shine bright here, but we need more of the SON.

    Hugs from this missionary mommy,

  15. Hey, Debbie! I know it's been awhile since I've been here, but I'm so glad for the "prompt" that led me here today. How thankful I am for the Word of God that has changed my heart in profound ways. I've been feeling the "pull" of a great many things as of late and depend on the grounding of God's voice everyday to see me through.

I hope that you are well. Blessings and peace to you this weekend.

  16. I love how simple the breakdown is - if people say they hear from God and it contradicts the Bible, they didn't hear from God. He doesn't contradict Himself. Amen!!! You say it perfectly. Blessings!

  17. Amen Debbie. It is so hard to remember "what you feel" is not determined by what is TRUE. It was a lesson I had to learn. Sending you hugs.

  18. Debbie this is a great post. Just last night in Bible class someone asked that we study "Hearing the Voice of God." I kind of retreated ... b/c this is often more of an emotionally charged discussion than a theological/biblical one. You have provided some good parameters for the discussion. Thanks!

  20. Sometimes the business of life hinders our hearing God's Voice but I have found if you silence yourself and surround yourself in God's beautiful creation, He speaks softly. This morning I was doing the wash and while waiting for the cycle to finish I step outside of the little laundry room and I felt the cool breeze on my face. The trees were swaying and the Rocky Mountains were clearly in view and covered with snow. The sky was perfectly blue and the birds were singing. There was peace and a knowing that God was with me in this place and telling me I was in His Hand.
