Introducing Fitness Friday

I’m so excited to join Sandy at God Speaks Today in a weekly Fitness Friday.

Now some of you may already be familiar with Sandy's blog but I only recently came to know her. And let me tell you, she's a pistol. Sandy is funny, a great writer, a Christian, a wife and mother ... and is greatly interested in health and fitness. I found myself looking forward to reading her Fitness Friday blog posts.

As you know, the focus of Heart Choices is how our day to day choices determine what our tomorrows will become. And I believe it’s important to address body, mind and spirit.

It's a new year and …everyone seems to be talking about losing a few pounds or starting to eat healthier or beginning to exercise.

So, I asked Sandy if I could participate in her Fitness Friday's. She was so gracious and open to making this happen. Thank you, Sandy!Sandy and I come from different and yet similar backgrounds.

I come from a medical background as cardiovascular nurse. I’ve dealt with people who either had heart disease or were at high risk for heart related problems. I worked with them and taught them to make healthier lifestyle choices.

Sandy is a freelance writer who describes herself as a health nut and fitness buff. One of the reasons Sandy is motivated to take care of her health is because her mother had her first heart attack at the age of 54 and died at 70. She also wants to teach her children a healthy way to live.

My family history includes heart disease too. My paternal grandfather died of a sudden heart attack. My dad had his first heart attack when he was in his early 60's. He's had numerous procedures since then including coronary artery bypass surgery, pacemaker, and even a defibrillator. He's just like the bionic man! My family history motivates me to eat healthy and to exercise.

Both Sandy and I want to be healthy, keep our weight in check and have energy and vitality. I know when I’m feeling good and have energy; I find I’m more open to interacting with others. I can be about the work that God has called me to do.

So, if you’re at a point in your life where you want to get serious about taking care of your health, check in with Sandy and me on Friday’s. I’ve had a preview of her post and she makes some great points about being realistic and getting past a weight loss plateau. I encourage you to visit her blog God Speaks Today.

How about you? Have you made any new decisions about taking better care of your health? Do you have specific areas of concern? Have you had trouble sticking with an exercise program? How about eating healthier? I’d love to hear any suggestions you may offer.

  3. So honored to be part of your blog.

  4. Just stopping by quickly before I start getting ready for work.

I'll be stopping over at Sandy's when I come home. This is something that I have struggled with since the age of 9--yes, 9!! And I am determined THIS YEAR to treat my body as the holy temple God has intended it to be!! I need accountability!!

Don't you love how God is using the internet to point us in the right directions???

  5. Thanks for sharing! This is one of those areas where I feel like I can never give 100%.

    God bless you.

  6. How neat that you and Sandy shared a blog day and topic!! Awesome!

We started our path to being healthy last week by cleaning out and getting rid off all the junk food and processed food in our fridge and pantry. Then went shopping and did our best to buy healthy stuff.

Now if I could just learn to cook it so we can stop eating burnt food.... :-)

  7. YES...5 1bs and then 5 more and then 5! 15 lbs gone this time next year. I take it in steps; long since given up the idea that I'll have the body of my youth, but you're right...I always feel so much better when my weight is in check and I'm eating better.

  8. I am glad to say that 4 nights in a row I have made dinners that we have sat at the table and ate together. In between meal snacking consists of fruit or veggies because I have not about junk since the new year. I have still have to get back to the gym but the weather has been so icy....but I will be hitting it soon. I love fitness friday and soon I will be participating.
    great post.

  9. The Ancient Greek philosophers used to say, a healthy mind in a healthy body, and we know that Greeks were fond of gym. (Plato's name comes from his nickname as a wrestler, since plato means broad-shouldered). After all, the Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC!!
You are right Debbie, to refer to fitness in relation to body, mind and spirti.
    Keep walking Debbie!!

  10. Boy I need to get serious about getting more healthy. I find it is so much harder since I left my 60s and entered the 7th decade. Wow, am I really that old? Yep 'fraid so.

  11. Hi Debbie,
I'm sending out my newsletter today and I've hightlighted Heart Choices as one of my Top 7.
I'll email it out today. :-)

  12. p.s. I don't have your email. Mine is: meg@megwolff.com

  13. Hi! I'm dropping by from Sandy's Blog! I always love her fitness friday posts and I'm looking forward to yours as well!

    Have a wonderful week!

    Kate :)

  14. I needed to stop by here tonight as I'm feeling a bit fluffy after the holidays.

Will be sure to check in with you on Fridays:)

  15. Here I go again, but frankly, I am joining a program at church that is a Christian-based diet program. The thing that has intrigued me about it, besides the spiritual aspect, it is suppose to help me learn about food. I know, I know, they all seem to say that. But sometimes you just need a jump-start, and I think at this point I need the accountability of the group. Exercise? Well, I did get that bike (pink, no less), and I actually do get it out of the garage and ride it. My first trip out was to the end of the street and back, now I can circle our little neighborhood. I'm trying, but admittedly, it is hard.

  16. Oh I can not wait. I will look forward to your posts on Friday.

Hope you are have a great day.

  17. Well, right now I feel sick and lazy (being in my first trimester, and all). I just want to get out there and be fit and healthy. I am now always dreaming of the time when I can exercise like crazy and be energetic - isn't that always how it goes - the thing you can't have is what you want the most...lol?
I won't be starting any strenuous exercise regine soon but I will do the little things (and I'm glad this blog values the little things).

    Thanks Debbie.
