Pets And Your Health

Did you know that having a pet can be good for your health? Research has shown that owning a pet can benefit your health and even improve the quality of your life. Sounds good, doesn't it?

Dogs can provide companionship, love and ... maybe even a reason to go for a walk. And that is always good for your heart.

Just take a look at some of the health benefits:
  • Companionship and friendship
  • Unconditional love
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Decreases anxiety
  • Improves your immune system
  • Increases levels of serotonin and dopamine (nerve transmitters that have calming and pleasurable properties)
  • May even get you exercising (after all, if you own a dog ...they always want to go for a walk)
And did you think of this? Owning a pet is a great way to meet people. It's a great conversation starter and people seem to be more friendly. (If you're single, this might come in handy.)

Some hospitals have pet programs where volunteers take dogs to visit the patients. They always seem to brighten up, no matter how sick they may be.

Think about it; a big lick, a wagging tail, improved health and unconditional love.
Now, who can resist that?

  2. My hubby, Moose, grew up on a farm full of animals - and he is the most 'de-stressed' person I know...lol.

Both Moose and I love big dogs and wish we had one - but our flat is so small, the three of us (including Lilu) barely fit!

    One day, though...

  3. Funny you should write about the blessings of having a pet. I have just ten minutes ago advice my daughter, who is not doing quite well at the moment, to get a cat. She loves cats and is always happy when cuddling with one.
We used to have cats before, but not of the three last years.
Pets do also need a lot of attention, and for the time being we are to much around to take properly care of one.
I do however hope my daughter wil follow my advice.

    About the name Berit, common in Norway;
The girl's name Berit is of Scandinavian and Dutch origin, and its meaning is "gorgeous, splendid, magnificient".

Hope the Berit girl of your acquaintance had some of those qualities.

  5. Pets are wonderful for your health. We got our new puppy a day or two before my fiancé got sick, and I think the little guy did a lot towards boosting my big guy's spirits while he was down.

Another added bonus (or curse if it is a day we want to sleep in) is our pup wakes us up every morning by 7 for his potty trip and breakfast. That has gotten us up and back to our tennis routine. :)

  6. Hi Debbie,

Awesome and soooooo true. I have a mut... It is the cutest and most adorable dog and he is like one of my children.

This pet bring so much to our lives and it is happiness, giggles, snuggles and unconditional love. God knew what He was doing in creating dogs as man's best friend. Great post.

  7. Debbie,
When I was 6 months pregnant with Joel my best little friend Johnny died a tragic death- he was my cat. My husband was so afraid I would miscarry from the trauma, I just kept telling myself and the kids that Jesus needed a kitty in Heaven so he took the best one He could find. Lucky has been all too willing to take Johnny's place and she is my little kitty girlfriend.

  8. You're preaching to the choir on this one.

We've got two rescued dogs from the Humane Society, a pit bull and a schipperke. And we've got three cats in the house, and one adopted stray in the yard. We love them so much, and they do require us to move around more, especially since our yard is not enclosed and we have to take them out on the leash to do their business (the dogs, that is). Also, having a breed of dog that folks are ridiculously afraid of makes me feel much safer on walks, and even in the home.
