Friday Photo Flashback ~ Lindenhurst

Friday Photo Flashback
It's Friday Photo Flashback and I'm linking up with Alicia of More Than Words.

I thought I'd take a walk down memory lane to the house where I grew up.

My dad came home one day and announced to my mother that he just bought a house.  There was no discussion; just an announcement.   My mother almost had a fit when she got her first look at this last house on Roosevelt Avenue in Lindenhurst, New York.  It was a fixer upper and in need of much tender loving care, that's for sure.

As kids we loved the fact that it was located across the street from Gehrlein's Boatyard.  The clam boats lined the dock along the canal as the clam diggers boarded them each morning before daybreak.

My bedroom was upstairs in the front.  I had a window seat that opened up and I could store all kinds of goodies in there.  I used to line my dolls up on that window seat as I played teacher.  My little sister Christine used to sit right in the middle of my dolls.
This photo is my brother Steve who was 18 months older than me.  He used to have a newspaper route and his basket held all of the papers.  He told me that this bike was stolen soon after this picture was taken and never found.
My dad remodeled the house over the years.  Gone was the front porch and instead he created a larger living room with a fireplace.  It looked so different from the original house and my mom liked it much more.

We had the original rickety wood ladder and we could climb up to the hatch that opened onto the roof.  We used to take all of our friends up there to see the Great South Bay and the stars in the sky.

My brother and I both graduated from Lindenhurst High School.  Those were good years with lots of fun and good memories.  I've stayed in touch with many of my friends from childhood and recently got reaquainted with many through Facebook.  How fun is that?

Don't forget to stop by and visit Alicia for Friday Photo Flashback.

Blessings and love,

  4. Thanks so much for sharing those fun photos with us! So cool.

The last time I visited my parents - I spent hours going through old pictures. It just blessed me so much!

And your comment on my blog about wanting the baby to stay safe - made me smile! It's hilarious - because when we are all outside...I'm always the one freaking out about her not staying on her blanket! She crawls off - I put her back on - she crawls off - I put her back on! So here lately I've been taking the play pen out - and letting her play in that! Much easier!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Debbie!

    Love to you,
    Kate :)

  8. I love your memory lane! I used to trade my junk-jewelry box to my girlfriend for her huge walking doll to play with. My (now getting married) daughter used to line her little weebil dolls all around her toybox for hours... won't you please come in Sonja and my suitcases to Norway for my daughter's wedding?...just got the new real feather-weight bags so maybe they wouldn't be too heavy! (smile)Isn't God good? My mother (my daughter's "mormor"
MUST be smiling in Heaven!! We'll be thinking of our Norwegian 3rd sister Debbie bigtime over there!

  14. You will laugh when I tell you that this house really does look like the one where I was born, in Long Island!

As to the dolls... undern my hanging bar in the close my sister and I shared, was my 'doll world'... story book dolls with clothes and little rooms I made from cardboard boxes. It was my childhood 'escape place' with a tiny window up high that brought light in.

    Such memories....

  18. Wow, that must have been some shock to your mother... I can't imagine! What a trooper she was in that season.

Every time we made a "move" it was a great adventure to me. It is now the same with my kids... they're very excited about the prospects of a new life in a new place. Thank God for children who support our ministry life (all four of them) and haven't made it hard for us in any way. I hope we're creating good memories for them as well.

  19. What a beautiful home! I love the wrap around porch, but I am sure the remodel turned out wonderfully. I love your memories that go with this post and the photos.

(I am heading to bed, but finally got the chance to link up...tomorrow, my hubby and I are driving early, early in the morning to Atlanta to listen to a Christian preacher, so it may be Sunday before I get some more blog reading.)

  21. Dear Debbie,
I my eyes the home of your childhood looks very much like "The American Dream".
From my point of view you must have had a wonderful time growing up.
You always look so pretty and well adjusted on the pictures.
I find the porches on American homes so charming and so typical American.
Almost a shame it had to be built in the house.
Then, again, I only know the porches from the movies. Sitting there on a garden swing in late, warm summer nights.
That looks so peaceful and attractive to me.

Our famous poet Henrik Ibsen says, one cannot own things forever, but memories of the good times are for keeps.

  22. I realize this is an old page, but I just had to comment. I had a friend see if there were any old pics of houses in Lindenhurst and she dug this up. I was so excited to see that it is the house that I spent my teenage years in. My name is Debbie and I had the front bedroom upstairs as well! My parents actually still live there!
