How Patient Are You?

How patient are you? In our fast paced society, it seems to be instant everything. Who needs to wait for anything?

See something you want? Buy it with your credit card. Are you hungry? Simply nuke your meal in the microwave or go to one of the fast food places in your area of town. Missed a show on TV? Watch it online.

Did you know that we used to have to actually get up and turn a nob on the television to switch to a different channel? There were no remote controls.

And there was something called layaway? If you wanted to buy something but you didn't have the full amount, you paid if off slowly but you only got to take the item home ...after it was paid in full. Imagine that?

Consider the following questions:

Body:
Do you get discouraged and give up after eating and exercising for one week just because ...you only lost one pound?

Mind:
Have you tried to read a book but get distracted by all the other things you have to do?

Spirit:
Have you prayed for something and not yet received an answer?

We don't always get to see instant results. After all, some things take time and ...patience on our part.

So, how patient are you?

  • Are you willing to wait for something?
  • Or have you grown so accustomed to having things right now in your timing and in your own way?
  • Do you have any examples that you might share?
  • Have you learned anything from having to wait for something?

  1. Layaway!!!! What a foreign concept to this generation. As a mother of seven children, my mom used layaway at K-Mart for EVERYTHING.

Because of my parents' wonderful example, I've learned and practiced patience with purchasing items. And because of that, my hubby and I have been debt-free for years. We don't even use credit. What a blessing.

I'm NOT patient when I'm waiting for my 7-year-old to stop fidgeting so he can focus on his homework, however...but that's another story.

    Great post!

  2. I remember layaway and remote-less TV's! Do you remember the Coca-Cola shirts back in the 80's? I think they were around $40 back then. I remember putting a Coke shirt on layaway for a couple of week. I STILL have the shirt in my closet to remember where I came from (and it means more to me because I worked hard for it).

I am patient in some areas, and not so patient in others.

I'd have to write a book to explain situations where I've been patient. :o)

    Loved the post.

    Be blessed!

  4. For the long haul...yes, I'm pretty patient. But in the short term (which is where most of us live our lives), I need some work. For me, it's about keeping perspective (long term). When I stray from perspective, my patience is the first to go.

    A work in progress, friend.

  5. I think I've learned that some things just take time. Kids need time to figure things out, and sometimes when impatient parents get in the way, they don't always learn the lessons God may have for them.

  6. I consider myself a fairly patient person, but I've learned patience the hard way.

Layaway--that was how my kids got their Christmas presents every year. I wonder why layaway isn't used these days? Is it because people are so into instant gratification? Probably so.

But, instant gratification and acquiring things only bring temporary happiness into our lives. These things will break or become unusable or maybe we won't even like them after a while.

There is only one true joy that can be placed in our hearts, our minds, our spirits--and that is Jesus Christ.

    J----Jesus
    O----Others
    Y----Yourself

    Good post, Debra!!

  7. Debbie,

Instant gratification is what we are teaching our son NOT to do!! It is difficult in an instant gratification world...we are constantly going counter to what is around us...however, we are trying to teach him godly principles and that's exactly what those are, aren't they?

    Great post, my friend!!

  8. I would like to think that I am a fairly patient person. I can wait for things.

But I was tested on this very same thing last week when I found out a client may not pay me for work that I've already done for him.

As long as I didn't know he might not pay, I was willing to wait. But when I found out the truth was otherwise, I became impatient.

To work on that unsatisfying feeling, I had to go outside of myself to find the answer. I had to get help. Since I did that, I've gone back to being patient again.

    Funny how that works.

    Impatience just doesn't feel good.

  9. That's funny about layaway!

I think in some areas I'm more patient than others. I have friends who aren't married yet and I always wonder how patient I would be to still not be married yet if I were in their shoes.

  10. Dear Debbie,
I am not familiar with the term layaway. Seems like a good idea though.
Oh, I guess I have had to learn patience the hard way.
"Grant me patience Lord, but hurry," could have been my unwillingly motto.

My wise brother once said, "I've always found it est to expect more from myself, than from my co-workers."
That was a great reminder. It still works.

As for illness, I've had to learn to cope, or not live at all.

I think the evolution of modern pharmacology has made us impatience.
Take a pill and to cover up the symptoms, not the cause of the illness have too long been the whole "treatment".

Not to speak of the uncontrolled use of antibiotics.
Children need time to be ill and build up their immune system, but parents are in a hurry to get back to work, and have no time to nurse their children..
    The evil ring has begun.

    God & me?
We go way back to my early childhood. Over and over again He has had to come to rescue.
Matth. 12 has been and still is my comfort
    19"HE WILL NOT QUARREL, NOR CRY OUT;
NOR WILL ANYONE HEAR HIS VOICE IN THE STREETS.
20"A BATTERED REED HE WILL NOT BREAK OFF,
AND A SMOLDERING WICK HE WILL NOT PUT OUT,
UNTIL HE LEADS JUSTICE TO VICTORY.
21"AND IN HIS NAME THE GENTILES WILL HOPE."

By His grace am I still his child.

  11. I am fairly patient until I pray for patience and then the Lord sends trials to teach me patience, then I am not patient. (hehhe)

In all seriousness, I have become better with age. Raising kids and husband teaches you patiences is the only way to be. Stress, arguing, etc.. does not get you anywhere.

    Have a great day.

  12. Well at the moment food is my biggest thing - and my body won't allow me to practice patients...lol. If it wants to eat I have to eat!

Patients for me largely depends on what it's for. At work if I ask someone to do something I expect they will do it immediately. I don't want to mess around when things need to get done.

However, at home, I always add another half hour to activities because I need to accommodate for my little one needing attention. In that sense it doesn't bother me if something takes all day to do as I enjoy putting my daughter first.

So I guess you can say I 'manage' my patients...lol.

    ;)
