Five Minute Friday: Ocean

It's Friday so I'm linking up for Five Minute Friday. Our word for today is OCEAN.

START

I grew up on the south shore of Long Island across the street from the canal, where the clam boats docked. The smell of salt air permeated the air.

I now live in the desert. Although I've grown to love Phoenix, Arizona, I have to admit I miss the ocean. We have many lakes to visit, but there's something special about hearing the crashing of the waves and feeling the ocean air on my face. Thank goodness, California is only a short plane trip away!

At night, I even go to sleep with the sound of the ocean waves. You see, we have an Alexa at the foot of our bed. I tell her, "Alexa, play Ocean Waves by Jo Baker."  And within a few minutes, I'm off to sleep for the night.

"In peace, I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety." Psalm 4:8

STOP

Blessings and love,

  1. Oh, Debbie, we are kindred spirits! I came home from a Los Angeles hospital to a home two blocks from Manhattan Beach, California. My mom used to wheel me along the boardwalk in my stroller. We eventually relocated to Hawaii, where I officially grew up. I went to sleep with the water slapping against the boats docked outside our condo. I took those waves and salt air for granted.

My husband and I have lived in Tucson since 1997, and I still haven't transitioned very well to desert life. He knows he has to relocate me to a coastal city (or Hawaii) every June, before the monsoon rolls in, so I don't go crazy. Literally. I have tried my hardest to make it through an entire year here, but I end up suffering depression from the relentless radiation. Turns out people like me can suffer the same disorder in too much radiation as those who suffer depression without enough sun. My husband says when he gets me to the ocean's edge, my entire demeanor changes. Inhaling the salt air and listening to the rhythmical wave crashing and rolling elevates and renews my spirit! It's definitely part of who God made me to be, and I rejoice in it! I also find beauty in the desert, but my heart resides (aside from Heaven) along the shores! Getting to the ocean at least once a year is one way I nurture a balanced, and happy, life.

    Blessings,

    Andrea
