My One Word for 2014

For the past few years, I've selected one word for each year.  Here's my list from the past few years:

  • 2011: TRUST
  • 2012: ADVENTURE
  • 2013: SURRENDER
After much prayer, my one word for 2014 is LOVE.  As I've learned (and continue to learn) to trust the Lord, I embark on an adventure with Him.  I don't always know where we're going but I'm learning to trust Him. Along the way, I've been learning to surrender it all to Him. After all, He loves me and has amazing plans for me. I'm a work in progress.  But through it all, He is changing me and for that I am so thankful.

As I read the Scriptures, I see an overall theme of love.  God created us in His image to be in relationship with Him.  Then Adam and Eve sinned.  That perfect order was disrupted as God cannot come into the presence of sin. But in His love, He already had a plan. Jesus, the Messiah, came into the world and lived a perfect life.  He paid the price for my sins when He died on the cross.  He was resurrected and now lives, interceding for me at the right hand of God, the Father (Romans 8:34). Now that is LOVE!

As my vertical relationship with God is right, my horizontal relationship with others begins to change. After all, He is working within me and transforming me as I cooperate with Him.

How thankful I am to be working with little children. So many spiritual truths are played out right before my eyes every day.  They teach me so much about life and love.

The Scriptures have much to say about faith and children:

"He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me." ~Matthew 18:2-5

"People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them." ~Mark 10:13-16

Children are teachable.  They are like little sponges as they learn about life and relationships.  I want to be teachable.  After all, I don't know it all.  I want to be a life long learner.

My prayer for 2014 is that my cup will overflow with the love of Jesus towards others.  I don't always agree with everyone but I want to respond with respect and love and not anger and hatred.

"Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." ~ Ephesians 5:1-2

So how about you?  Have you chosen your one word for 2014? I'd love to hear about your word.
