When Trouble Comes What Do You Do?

When trouble comes, what do you do?  Which way do you turn?

Our quote for this week's In Other Words Tuesday comes from an eBook entitled Psalm 91: He Who Dwells.

He also promises to be with us when we are in trouble. Notice that He didn't say that He would take troubles away.  That's because we will encounter trouble.  We will have trials and disappointments.
Psalm 91: He Who Dwells by Lara Velez

I don't know about you but I tend to do some heavy duty praying when troubles come.  I begin by asking God to remove my troubles. I want Him to make things right and ...to do it now please.

That's my typical first response.

Although God does have the power to remove it, I find that He often chooses to use the very thing I want to remove to ...change me.

Imagine that!

I've learned that some troubles come:
  • As a consequence of poor choices
  • Overflowing consequences of someone else's poor choices
  • To teach me, train and refine me
  • To help me discover and uncover what's really in my heart
  • From simply living in a sin laden world
But the important part of going through troubles is ...what do you do?  Which way do you go?

I've discovered that the best place to go is to spend quiet time with the Lord.  No matter where I live, I find a place to go each morning and pour out my heart to the One who holds everything in His hand. He is sovereign and everything must go through His fingers of love before it touches me.  How thankful I am for that.

I've learned that troubles cause me to draw closer in my walk with Him.  He is my comforter.  Many Scriptures have helped me to endure while going through troubles.

Isaiah 41:10

New International Version (NIV)
10 So do not fear,(A) for I am with you;(B)
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen(C) you and help(D) you;
I will uphold you(E) with my righteous right hand.
I have this verse laminated and placed right in front of my computer screen.

Psalm 73:25-26
New International Version (NIV)
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?(A)
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.(B)
26 My flesh and my heart(C) may fail,(D)
but God is the strength(E) of my heart
    and my portion(F) forever.

Yes, He may not immediately remove all of my troubles but He teaches me in the midst of them.  I've learned to hold things of this world more loosely.  And I've learned that He is faithful and trustworthy.

I'm linking up with Sunflower Faith for In Other Words Tuesday.

Blessings and love,

  4. Debbie:

Your words hit the nail on the head! You have said what i have felt so many times, and then God leads us through things, and in the process, we have learned more of who He is, and more about ourselves. His refining is never easy, but it is always for our good, isn't it. Such a good post!

  5. Debbie, you crack me up! I'm so glad to see your honesty about asking God to remove your troubles... NOW PLEASE. This is usually how I start my prayer as well. Of course, it always ends up with an issue with my pride, my attitude or my mouth :) But, I do know WHO and where to run in case of trouble! Praise God! Love your blog entries.

  6. My first response to trouble is usually a plea to fix or remove a problem but I realize that God uses the difficultes in my life to help refine me...so my prayer more often is Lord help sustain me through this....doesn't make it easier but is refinement ever easy?

  7. When I didn't have that much trust & faith years ago, oh boy, it was just much easier to worry. But with Him in my life, I know it's useless to do that. Jesus even said that worrying will not add a day into our lives. I like to think of troubles now as a way of increasing my faith & truly relying on Him so I can respond always in a positive way. Not only God proves that He is there with us, I know that I can face another day knowing His strength is what I have and that the hope that comes from Him never perishes. Thank you for reminding me to always draw nearer and not stray away from our good God when life's storms come. Bkessings and love to you sister.

  8. Dear Debbie,
For sure, most of the times I ask God to take my troubles away. However, I know one thing, I always turn to God when troubles overwhelm me, and the fact that I do so, in a weird way shows, I believe in him and his power.
It takes a strong back to carry only good days my grandmother used to say.
I don't know where I would have been without my troubled days.
    Psalm 50:

15 2And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me."
    Amen

  9. I too ask Him to "please fix" whatever "it" is! But...more often than not I have to work through it. I have found that through my problems He helps me to grow in Him...once I give up my own will. Great post Debbie.

  10. Hi Debbie!

It's so sad that many people doubt and blame God (and even turn away from Him!) in times of trouble. Reality tells us that we will experience problems in life. However, if we go through them while knowing God, we can react to them with a different perspective and with a strength that is not our own. Just as Jesus said, "My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."

I hope all is going well with you Debbie; I bet you are getting excited to see the children again! :)

    Blessings and hugs sweet lady,
    Denise

  12. In the season of life I am in right now I find myself running to Him everyday. I wonder how in the world I'd get through without Him. My mom is in the hospital. She fell at my sisters while she had seizure and hurt her ankle. I should bring her home today if all went well in the night. I am tired physically and mentally but honestly the Lord is soo faithful to me....and how grateful I am. This was a GREAT post Debbie. Have a good day!
