Do You Struggle with Change?

I have a confession to make. I don't like change! I tend to stick with the same because it's comfortable. As I look back over my life, there are times when I knew I needed to do something different but ...I stuck with the same.

You'd think I would have become more accustomed to change with the ups and downs of the last four years of my life.  I transitioned from a very comfortable retirement living in my dream home to returning to full time work in a different profession. Oh and along the way we moved into a much smaller living space; a condo. How's that for change?

I even changed my profession. Instead of working as a nurse, I switched to education. For the last four and a half school years, I've worked in a preschool classroom with another teacher.

Heidi and I worked so well as a team.  We laughed, we cried and encouraged one another. She helped me get through those transition years as I adjusted to a different way of life. Besides being co-workers, we became friends. When she decided to leave the job to work with her husband, I was happy for her but sad for me. It had been a great run!

But then I was teamed up with Mandie. It was a change but I have to say that we've had a great school year and we get along very well. She is so much fun!

But now ...another change. I was asked to be the lead teacher for the Mini-Mustangs beginning in January. Same school but different classroom, different students. Another change!

I am very excited. I know this is a good change. I look forward to teaching these very little ones about school. I realize there will be adjustments like separation anxiety for mommy and child. But I hope to provide a stable loving environment so they will have a great first experience with our school.

However, I will miss the students in our Pre-K 3 classroom. I will miss the students in my after school class. Of course, I will still get to see them but it won't be the same.

I think back to years ago when I dreamed about what my life would be like. I used to line my dolls up in the window seat of my bedroom with my little sister Christine wedged right in the middle. I' d pretend I was a teacher. I also dreamed of being married and having several children. Fast forward to today.   I'm married to my honey but we weren't able to have children.

So beginning in January, I will be teaching little ones in my own classroom. I'll have the opportunity to teach them and spend  the week days with them.  But I then I get to return them to their own mommies and daddies at the end of the school day. It's funny how life turns out. I think God answered my prayers in ways I never imagined.

Maybe change isn't such a bad thing after all.

So how about you? Do you struggle with change or do you embrace it?

Blessings and love,

  2. Hi Debbie! Our pastor preached on change today. And about how fear stops us from change. If we don't move forward, just do the same stuff, it's not what God wants for us. He wants us using all our gifts, and moving closer and closer to him.

Best of blessings on your new teaching position. I know you will be GREAT.

  3. Debbie this just made me want to hug you!!! I think I did change better when I was younger and yet the biggest changes have been in this season of life and it is still happening. I guess if things weren't changing then the wouldn't get to experience all God has for us.

  4. I've always felt that change is something that is always going to happen and sometimes there isn't much we can do about it but make the most of what is given to us in this beautiful journey of life. It's taken me a long time to realize that but finally am there and for the most part am in a better place. Thank you for telling your story. Merry Christmas.

  5. Oh I struggle for sure...and your right, after my 60 years here on earth you'd think that I would know by now that NOTHING ever stays just the same. Some changes are HUGE and some are quite small, but change is what life is all about. It's funny....sometimes, I am excited for a change and can't wait for something new to happen, and other times I am just a mess looking back on all that was and won't ever be again. The one thing that always remains constant of course is our Lord. Praise God we can count on that. He will ALWAYS love us, ALWAYS wants our best,. and ALWAYS cares....Congratulations on the new position. I KNOW you will do soo wonderfully. And make all those little ones feel special, and reassure their parents by just how much you care. Hope you have a good week!

  6. Deb, you are a blessing. Your journey inspires me. I so appreciate your love for kiddos (I share a love for the same) and also your heart's desire to teach (I share that, too!) I remember when you first told me about changing professions- I am still on a journey with God, and my career has been redirected...awaiting to exactly what and where BUT He is with me. One day at a time. May He bless your new adventure- and may it bring joy daily to you.
    Hugs! Dawn

  9. It depends on what the change is as to whether or not I adjust well. Some changes make me "kick and scream" and then others I have a mush better attitude about. But, change is unavoidable for sure. I know you will be great with the wee ones and can't even imagine all the changes you have been through in recent years. You are a real testimony to surviving some major changes. Blessings to you!

  10. Change is never easy especially when the outcome is not clear in our own perspective. Through it, I believe God challenges us to exercise our faith as we are reminded that we are so limited on our own strength but with Him, wd can do everything. I wanted to be an architect yet ended up being a nurse. You may not have children of your own but God equipped you with a "mommy heart". Be strong sister in the Lord's mighty power.
