Five Minute Friday: Finish

It's Five Minute Friday. This week our one word writing prompt is: FINISH.

START

Finish is a good word for me. I've been working as the Site Leader for my school's summer camp this year. It's been a long and very hot summer with triple digit temperatures. I need lots of energy to keep up with the long hours and the many children attending. There is only one more week to go. But I'm determined to finish strong!

Many of the little children are learning to swim. At the end of swim time, they look forward to hanging on to Nick and taking a ride to the end of the pool. As you can see from the photo, his arms are strong and he won't let them go. They've learned that they can count on Nick. He will not let go.

How about you? Are you at the end of a long season of challenges? Are you tempted to give up? I encourage you to finish strong. Don't let go.

"Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me." Philippians 3:12 (NIV)

Five Minute Friday: BLOOM

It's Five Minute Friday.  With a one word writing prompt, we're given five minutes to write our blog post. Our word for today is: BLOOM.

START

If I'd been given an advance vision of where I'd be in life right now, I think I would have run away. This isn't what I had in mind. I was quite happy to keep things the same. I was enjoying life, volunteering and spending time with family. I had plenty of time to read, cook and travel.

But life has a way of turning upside down. Four years ago, we moved from a 4,000 square foot home to a 760 square foot condo. I had to return to work full time. I was approaching the age when most of my friends were retiring and planning their cruises.

I now get up very early in the morning so I can have my quiet time, read and exercise. I go to work five days a week. I don't have much time for vacations and shopping.

But ...

I get to spend my days with little children.

I can't help but smile as I write these words.

Debbie; the woman who always wanted children but couldn't have them.
Debbie; the one who gave up on that dream and told herself to get on with life.
Debbie; the woman who chooses joy instead of defeat.
Debbie; the woman who loves Jesus.

How thankful I am that God had a plan for my life. Am I blooming where I've been planted? I think I am. Each day gives testimony to that. I smile as I'm greeted with hugs by little ones. Words of "I love you" from the mouths of babes.

Yes, God is good.
And yes, I'm blooming where I've been planted.

Learning to Trust and Be Still

Learning to trust can be hard. On top of that, being still seems almost impossible in this day of multi-tasking. I learned a lesson recently from children. They are often the best teachers.

This past week I had the opportunity to spend time in the pool with the little children attending our school's summer camp. There were groups of four children with ages ranging from 3-6. I would have each of the children sit on the top step of the pool as I instructed them one at a time. A lifeguard stood by attentively making sure they followed my instructions and were safe.
