A Smile Can Make a Difference

A smile can make a difference!

I was on Facebook (of course) and noticed my friend Lisa Shaw posted this:

Sitting in the waiting room again for my daughter's physical therapy from the accident and FINALLY someone I can relate to....a woman with a warm smile says, "Good morning everyone". Ahh I love people like that! On this rainy, cool early morning our smiles and greetings brought sunshine in. If you know me then you know I'm big on smiles and lovin' on people. :) blessings all!!

It's amazing that something so simple can infect an entire room of people.

I thought of George.  He was a man with a contagious smile. George died in 2003 but I smile every time I think of this man.  He always had a smile on his face.

Every year for my birthday George called me and sang "happy birthday".  If Greg answered the phone, he'd talk to him and then ask if he could sing to me.  Btw, George was an elderly man from my church.

At George's funeral, Pastor Dan mentioned that George liked to call people on their birthdays. He asked how many of us had been blessed by George's singing.  Almost the entire audience raised their hand.  Then Pastor Dan asked how many of us thought we might be the only one George called each year to sing to.  We all laughed as most of us again raised our hand.

I want to be like George.  How lovely to be able to light up and relax a group of people with a simple smile.

I found the vinyl decal in the photo on Pinterest.  I'm thinking of buying it to put on my bathroom wall as a reminder each morning.  I may not like all I see when I look in the mirror these days but a smile can make a difference.

Btw, Lisa Shaw has one of the best smiles I've seen.  Having the pleasure of meeting this gal in person, I can say that her smile can light up any room.

Blessings and love,

  1. What a great story! And what a legacy to leave, a smile that warmed hearts all over his life.

I agree.. Lisa's smile makes me smile too.

btw... go for the decal, it'll always be there to remind you. I like that idea. Sometimes we can just use a little vinyl on the wall to re-deliver a message each day. :)

  2. This made me think of Miss Dolores from our last church. She called everyone on their birthdays and sang... even sang on our answering machine if we weren't home.

And yes, Lisa Shaw has an awesome smile! She just makes me happy.

Hey, let me know if I can help you in any way as you begin to put together some writing thoughts from your journals. I'd love to be a support to you.

  3. Such truth and it's free and so easy to share, but I'm afraid that I forget that more often than I care to admit. Thanks for the sweet reminder and tomorrow I will make an extra effort to share my smiles!

  4. Debbie,

You bless my heart so much! It is your smile that radiates Jesus and your heart for people!

I appreciate this message so much! What a legacy George left with you! Smiling, I believe is such a simple YET powerful way to shine Jesus' love to another person.

    I love and appreciate you!

  7. How I do agree. A smile, when it comes from the heart, is an icebreaker.
Even I, with my ugly Norwegian teeth, know I get a better communication when I am smiling.
I tell myself, people doesn't mind that much how I look, but they mind how I behave.
Am I friendly, am I actually seeing the person I'm talking too.
But I have to keep on telling myself, 'cause my bathroom mirror shows an elderly, often tired woman.
I can at least be a nice elderly woman!

Dear friend...thank you for stopping by. I have been out of the blog loop for quite some time, but hope to get back to my "once a week" posts. Your visits always brings a "smile" to me :o)

  10. A smile can be a real icebreaker, it puts people at ease, and can be a doorway to conversation with perfect strangers.

  11. How sweet it is to be reminded of George - such a blessing he was. And because of his smile, his sweet spirit, he continues to bless our lives. Funny, I was thinking today, along different lines, but I think it appropriate.....
how do I want people to remember me? I hope words like "kind, thoughtful, loving, caring..." come to mind when people remember me. I must admit, I was thinking of someone else, wondering if this person really wants to be remembered for being "edgy, always able to make a smart comeback, hard-nosed - no one could take advantage of her..." Sometimes it seems that kindness is not in style.
Yes, remembering George makes me smile too. Makes me want to work on my "smile."
