Walk Your Talk

It's In Other Words Tuesday and our host for this week is Tami of The Next Step.  Tami chose the following quote for us to write about:

"It is no use walking anywhere to preach
unless our walking is our preaching."
   ~ Francis of Assissi ~

How do you live day to day?  What happens when you think nobody is looking?  Do you walk in love?

You can be the most eloquent speaker and teacher of the Word.  But the Scripture says ...it must be done in love.

I remember attending a Christian conference.  The teacher was very intelligent and knowledgable as he presented the material.  However, as he exited the stage during our break he didn't realize that his microphone was still turned on.  When the audience heard his irritated words, we were shocked and he was embarassed!

Lesson to self; walk your talk.

There's always someone watching, especially if you are preaching to others.  And always remember that even if you think nobody sees you, nothing is hidden from the Lord.  He sees it all!

My paternal grandfather was a great example of someone who walked his talk.  As a little girl, I loved to accompany  him to the stores.  When we walked into the bakery, he was always greeted with smiles and of course, everyone knew his name.  I loved it when they yelled "Hi Henry".

That was my Grandpa and he walked in love wherever he went.

Maybe that was why he often had new friends accompany he and my Nana to church on Sundays.  He was always inviting new faces he met.  How could they resist his smile and warm personality?  He couldn't help but share the love of Christ with others.  It overflowed to others so easily.

How about you?  Do you walk your talk?

You and I may  not be preachers but as Christians, we can choose to share the love of Christ with others.

Blessings and love,

  2. I think it's easy to say we're Christians, but when it comes to living that life...walking the walk, we fall short in many ways. I know I do!

Thank you for this reminder that we are to act in love..not just say it, but live it!!

  3. Debbie - this is straight from God to me as I continue to prepare for my talk this month. As you know I seek to walk my talk very closely and especially now as I will be sharing HIS-story of our lives to so many new people.

Love you!!! Beautiful post for all of us!

  4. What a precious memory from your grandfather. Like it or not someone one is always watching. Our lives are letters that are being read.

  5. It doesn't take much does it to spot someone who is truly walking as they talk. Looking at the picture of your grandfather I think of a preacher I had growing up. He was indeed a fine example of someone whose walk matched his talk.

  7. Our lives really are on display (like it or not) ESPECIALLY if we are "talking" for Him. That's what makes the "walking" so much more important. Doesn't matter WHAT we say if it isn't WHAT we do. What a neat Grandpa you had...such a blessing. Have a wonderful day. HUGS

  8. I've often heard it said that our lives are the only Bible some people will ever read.

    Thanks for the reminder.

  10. They say that character is who you are when no one is watching (or listening!). It holds true with our Christian walk too. We never know who will be observing but God always is so that in itself should be motivation enough to make sure our walk and talk glorify Him.

  11. We leave footprints, which serves to remind me that my walk is a powerful witness - perhaps even MORE powerful than my talk. I just pray it's God-honoring, and blessable.

    Love that picture!

  12. It scares me to think others may be watching. Is that an indication I've got some cleaning to do? Praise God for examples like your grandfather who show us how to do it.

  13. Just as we follow examples of those before use, we are becoming the examples of those behind us. The consequence of that reality is motivation to walk the talk. Thanks for sharing.

  18. What a wonderful testimony of your grandfather.

Living out our faith - daily, moment by moment - is what Eugene Peterson called "a long obedience in the same direction."

Great post! That story about the speaker is really something to think about!

  19. Isn't it the truth...as Christians we need to be just as much about "the walk" as "the talk." Actually, we probably say more about our faith in a busy checkout stand than we do in the pew at church. Thank-you for this post, it is a good reminder to walk in the manner of which we have been called.
    Love you.

PS I'm only going to send this one response, unlike a friend of ours who sends multiple posts! LOL

  20. Hi Debbie,
My pastor always says, "You can't preach cream and live skim milk." That's so true. I was reminded of the verse that says, "We're living epistles, known and read of all men." Makes me think of a book. . or even a blog. A blog is where people read our words. But once we step away from the computer, what do others see? How are we being "read?" We're basically "living blogs." :)
Hope all is well. Been missing the time to blog. . .and keep in touch. I'm on spring break now. . so there's a few extra minutes to check in--and mountains of laundry! LOL
    Hugs
