Praying the Names of God ~ Husband

I'm back to studying Ann Spangler's book "Praying the Names of God" and linking up with Jill of Forever N Ever N Always.  This week the focus is on the  name of God as ISH or Husband.

God is the ideal husband, the One who protects and provides for His people.  He does not abandon us or divorce us.

  • In the Old Testament, ISH (meaning husband), symbolized the ideal relationship between God and Israel.
  • In the New Testament, Jesus is revealed as the sacrificial bridegroom of the church.
According to Ann's study, our destiny and our greatest purpose as God's people is to become His bride.

What a beautiful analogy!

As a believer, God wants you to know Him as your protector, provider and lover of your soul.  He is so faithful, unlike many human relationships. We can always count on Him.  His love is unfailing.

"For your Maker is your husband --
the Lord Almighty is His  name --

the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer;
He is called the God of all the earth.
The LORD will call  you back
as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit --

a wife who married young,
only to be rejected," says your God.
"For a brief moment I abandoned you,
but with deep compassion I will bring you back.
In a surge of anger
I hid my face from you for a moment

but with everlasting kindness
I will have compassion on you,"
say the LORD your Redeemer.
Isaiah 54:5-8
There have been too many times when I've wandered seeking my own way.

How thankful I am that God loves me and continues to call me back to Himself.  He is so faithful.

Blessings and love,

  3. Oh Debbie! Charles Spurgeon's "Faith's Checkbook" Devotional was this very passage in Hosea! In fact, not long ago, when I grabbed the Bible and said, "Father, I need a WORD from YOU!" I opened it up to the very passage in Isaiah 54! Made me cry like a baby! To know that HE, the Maker of the universe, really IS my Husband, and will draw me back, even if I wander into the momentary "wilderness of doubting." Thank you for sharing this. For even today, I feel the Lord calling me, urging me to rest in His unfailing, loving arms. And such strong arms they are! Big hugs to you!

  4. Dear Debbie,
I feel enriched when reading your "praying in the name of God posts."
To so many it's easier to tell they believe in God than in his son, Jesus.
When I ask what God they believe in, I get answers like, "A creating force,"A universal light"and other vague and actually indifferent proposals.
I feel inspired when reading your
many name and virtues of the God we serve.
2Chor9:8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

  6. We can always count on God - He is our Rock and our firm foundation. What a blessing it is , as part of the Church, to be His bride.

  7. How wonderfully true this is! I remember holding on to God through my divorce and the years following as my Husband and the lover of my soul. Over and over again, He reveals Himself to me as the One who loves me and offers Himself to me as protector, provider, and counselor. Great post!! As always.

  10. I cannot believe the timing of this post. Just two days ago, at around this very time, I awoke thinking of a blog friend who just recently lost her husband. Having been through that experience myself about twenty months ago, I was surprised at the words that begun jumping out of my heart, almost literally. SO much so that although I wasn't intending to write a blog entry that morning, I opened a new post and within a few minutes it was done. Even the idea for the kind of pictures to post and the song were almost miraculously found.

Those very passages you quoted from Isaiah and Hosea... they were burning on my heart that morning... but somehow I did not include them in my post.

Reading this post serves as a confirmation, dear Debbie. I will go back to my July 25 post and include the passages...

Thank you so much for speaking to my heart. Unknown to you of course, this is a new season in my life where I am discovering God as my husband. Amazing...

Thank you for being God's messenger of truth to me this morning (it's 5:13 a.m. here).

    Love
    Lidj

  11. First I read your post today Debbie, and loved it, and then I read the comments above... isn't it awesome how God ministers to each of us and yet so many many similarities among His children.

This one of God as our husband, brings so many comforting truths to our hearts. We are never without the faithfulness of God when we are His.

    I really loved this!

    Hugs!

  12. Wonderful.
I love how He can even manifest it physically, when my husband is out of town. So many years of traveling and I am here just with the kids. I have felt Jesus manifest Himself to me during those times...even making the bed fill warm and occupied. To be there to give me counsel and what to do when I couldn't get a hold of my husband...and then the most precious truth that we are His Bride.
    Blessings...enjoyed
