What Can We Learn From Susan Boyle?

You've probably seen the video of Susan Boyle when she totally shocked the judges of the TV show "Britain's Got Talent" last week. The YouTube video was so popular that they disabled it. I was able to embed this shorter version.

What does this say about the world in which we live?

People are quick to judge by outward appearance.

In our society, it seems that youth and beauty are more highly valued.

But just because a person is attractive and friendly doesn't mean ...they are competent and capable.

Or if a person is overweight that ...they are lazy?

I was so glad that Susan Boyle shocked the panel of judges that included Simon Cowell from American Idol. You could see the smirks and hear the sarcasm in his voice when he first questioned the contestant.

And then ...Susan sang her heart out!

Did you see the change on the judges and audiences' faces?

The Bible says in 1 Samuel 16:7

"...The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.
Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

I wonder how often we've missed out on a talent like Susan's simply because of appearance.

I have to say that I've seen people judge by appearance. There are times when I've run to the grocery store with no makeup, my hair pulled back, wearing sunglasses and sweats. And other times, when I wear makeup and fix my hair.

People tend to treat you differently when you look your best. It's just a fact. We may not like it but ...that is the world in which we now live.

But Susan Boyle has certainly got people talking. And maybe that's good because as a Christian, I don't want to be that way. I hope I would want to get to know a person ...regardless of outward appearances.

What about you? Do you treat people differently based on appearance? How about the little child that is adorable? Are they treated differently by people?

Before you leave your comment, I wanted to show you something.

I created a widget asking for opinions on Susan Boyle. I would love for you to try it out. It's easy. The cumulative results will be shown in real time. This widget can be shared and will continue to accumulate results across the web.

Here's how you do it:

  1. Simply select the words that best reflect your opinion or add your own.
  2. Then rate on a 1-5 scale with one=disagree and 5=agree.
  3. You can add an optional comment if you like.
  4. Click submit.

If you wish to share this widget, use this URL: http://qcwidget.com/widgets/48909cf8ecc1

Let's learn from the Susan Boyle experience.

And ...I really hope she wins the competition!

So, let's hear your comments.

  1. I loved seeing the changes that occurred on the people's faces as they heard her sing. And I know what you are talking about as far as how people treat you based on how you may look at any given time. I have to admit that I LOVE big babies and will gravitate toward them before smaller babies. I think it's because I birthed very large babies. But still it's favoritism. I need to be aware of that because I could unintentionally hurt another Mom's feelings by not expressing such attention on their child.
    Great post.
    Blessings,

  2. It is true. What a world we live in ... so judgmental. I'm glad GOD sees the heart and I pray He will give us more of His understanding about people.

    Love and blessings!

  3. Yes, the world is judgmental but what is sad is that I see this kind of thinking in the body of Christ sometimes and it upsets me too. I've volunteered on many women's boards in churches and they can be brutal about other women.

I'm so glad you targeted this topic today so we can look within and get rid of judgment.

  5. Hey, Debbie! We are so geared toward what is pleasing to the eye. Hmmm...maybe it's Eve's fault! LOL! It's a shame but sometimes we are judgmental of those that are not pleasing to us, like those in wheelchairs or that aren't able to speak distinctly or that have spiked hair or tattoos.

This reminds me of how people perceive Nick Vujicic, the man with no limbs who loves God with all his heart. What an awesome witness for the Lord!

Thanks for sharing this, Debbie. I agree with you totally! Great post!

    Blessings...Lynn

  6. Wow! I loved that! I often wonder what it would be like if we could see the inside beauty as clearly as we can see the outside.

I think many people will be surprised when we get to heaven...
seeing the unexpected, rewarded servants (perhaps the unexpected).

Thanks for sharing such a great, thought-provoking post! I pray that we would seek to know people before we make a judgement or even conclude our own expectation of another.

    Thanks Debbie!
    Love you!

  8. I loved that video. I posted it on Facebook a few days ago after I heard about it. I just think it shows how God gifts EVERONE for something great. I found it heartbreaking that she was 47 years old and the public was just discovering that voice.

    It made me cry.

  11. Debbie,

I am so glad that God sees the inside of us and not the outward appearance...oh, if we could only do the same!

    Beautiful post, my friend.

  12. When I saw her on Fox the other day I was screaming with excitement as she BLEW THEM AWAY on that program.

The world judges a book by its cover and I'm SO THANKFUL that GOD does not! They judged her look and age and they were convicted the moment she opened her mouth.

PRAISE THE LORD! There's a lot of nuggets in there to glean from.

    Love ya.

  14. This is great!!! I actually just saw a clip on this amazing woman last night. WOW, you are so right....I was kinda shocked at the looks on everyone's faces when she got to the stage. Our culture is so about IMAGE, the outside.....nevermind the inside. It is hard not to get drawn into that thinking as well. We as Believers must be on our guard, setting our minds on things above and diving into the Word!!! Thanks girl!

  15. I am so glad you were able to link us over to the Susan Boyle performance. I had heard just a snippet of her singing and yet, I had not been able to access the entire event. It was such a blessing to hear her and see the response. thank-you. It really is a reminder that we should treat each person kindly, respectfully...Jesus said, "to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me." As was His example, we need to respond to everyone in love.
    Thanks again.
