A Little Help From My Friends

Have you ever felt like this? Overloaded, overwhelmed and ...very distracted?

That's kind of how I'm feeling right now. And I don't like it at all!

When I feel like this, it's hard for me to focus on what I need to do.

Writing has become such a wonderful outlet for me. But I've even been struggling with that lately. I can't tell you how many drafts of posts I've written in the last two days alone.
So, what's a girl to do?

I think I need a little help from my friends!

That reminds me of a Beatles song:

"What would you do if I sang out of tune,
Would you stand up and walk out on me.
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song,
And I'll try not to sing out of key.
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends,
I get high (NOT REALLY!) with a little help from my friends,
Oh I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends."

Blogging friends, what do you do when you feel overwhemed and distracted?

Do you ever struggle with your writing?

Or when life gets tough, do you find writing a help?

I'd really like to know how you deal with this. Can I get a little help from my friends? Thank you!

  1. I get up and walk around a little but the first thing I know I'm seated back at the computer. I don't know how to break the addiction. I guess I don't really want to. lol

  2. I took a month away from blogging because I was a bit overwhelmed with the goings on of my day to day life. I wouldn't suggest that for everyone, but taking maybe a week off, or just doing some simple posts, like photos with just a little description, helps give the mind time to relax. A relaxed brain will ultimately start back up again with new writing ideas. Just don't feel pressured to do it, otherwise you will be stuck.

  3. I don't even remember how I connected with your blog but I read several of the post. . enjoyable!
Your mother was so beautiful and so are you!

There are probably many ways to downsize your books. Several years ago I started giving a "recycle" book as a gift with birthday gifts. Some of my friends seem to be more interested in what book I would chose to give more than the "new" gift. This has been fun.

  4. Hi friend. Well, the first thought that came to me was for you to run to the Author of all information Himself. Run and spend some time with the Lord. Whatever you experience with Him in those times will birth something new in you (and give you something to write about). He is the Creator and since His Spirit lives in you -- creation lives within your heart. He will stir that up within you. I know it! (Ha, I'm speaking to myself too.)

    Bless you Sister!

  5. Thank you all for your kind comments to help me.

Charlotte- I know what you mean. I sit at my computer too many hours of the day.
Kristi- It's so good to read your thoughts again too. glad you're back from your blogging break.
Mary- I'm so glad you came to visit. I'll have to check out your blog too. BTW, that's a great idea about the books. I may do that.
Beth- Isn't that just like you to take me back to the Lord? Yes, He is my source and you're so right. Thank you my friend.

  6. I step away and take a break. Don't know if you have noticed, I have been blogging a lot less. I to have had the same feelings along with God teaching me things of the heart. =)

  7. Yes, I get like that. Yes, my desk sometimes looks like that. Yes, I sometimes struggle with my writing. (Sounds like we'd be great friends!)

If my desk is a mess and I need to write, I clear it off and pile everything out of sight behind me. A clear desk makes me want to write. Getting some writing done then "empowers" me to tackle the piles on the floor behind me one at a time until it's cleared.

I have certain books by certain authors that I love the way they write. I will read a little in those when I need motivation or a "muse."

I also make sure to exercise several times a week - really helps me to not to feel overwhelmed. And I also try to get out some just to people watch.

Lastly, my kitchen timer is a great friend. I'll set it for 10 minutes and tell myself I have to clean until it beeps, then I can stop and do whatever I want for awhile. Or I'll set it for 35 minutes and tell myself I have to write until it beeps.

    Blessings! ~ Rachel

  9. Debbie:

I definitely have those times. One thing that's helped me a lot with my blog is having specific days that I post (for me right now it's Monday, Friday and sometimes Wednesday)

Then having a specific theme for each of those days (Monday is when I talk about hearing God's voice, Friday is Fitness Friday and Wednesday is a light day...give-aways, videos, funny stories).

As a writer, we always look for things to write about (I watch my kids, listen to my husband, consider Sunday's sermon, think about what's in the news, etc). Having specific themes in mind all the time helps me to focus on certain events that I can later turn into a post.

I also find I need to write when the inspiration hits. I have regular times that I write, but sometimes if something comes to me on an "off time," I need to go with it. If it doesn't fit my blog now, I can always save it for later when I hit a writer's block.

I also go back to some of my old journals from the last year or two for inspiration. I'm amazed at everything God has taught me over the years that I've already recorded. It's just a matter of going in there and mining the gold.

I also surf the internet for ideas. I google subjects that I'm mulling over in my head and see what other people are saying about them. Almost always I find something that gives me an idea, and I can go from there.

And finally, I'm always in at least one book...usually two or three. This keeps a steady stream of info in my head for continual inspiration.

Hope this helps. Fitness Friday wasn't the same without you!

    Love,
    Sandy
