Thank You Veterans

Today is Veteran's Day and I'm so grateful to the men and women who serve in the military. They deserve a day of recognition for the many sacrifices they've made to keep us safe in the United States. It's a day to say thank you.

I remember the day when my brother signed up for the Navy and went off to boot camp. It was during the Vietnam War when they had a draft. His number was low so he decided to join the branch of the service that he preferred. Thankfully, he returned home safely after serving overseas.

My cousin Ken was in the Army and he spent time in Vietnam. He returned home to find that his wife left him and so he lived with my family for some time as he adjusted. I remember his first 4th of July back. When the fireworks went off ... he jumped. It reminded him of the gunfire in battle.

This is a picture of my brother Steve and his wife Barbara with cousin Kenny. These are two veterans many years later. Thank you for your service. I'm very grateful for the many men and women who serve our country.

  3. My Pop and Nana met during WWII. They were both nurses stationed in Papua New Guinea. The Japanese used orange gas over the medical camps and later in life they greatly suffered because of it. I lived with my Nana and Pop for part of my childhood - my Nana taught me how to be a good person. I loved her so much. She died last year at a time when I was applying for my second residency in Norway - so I couldn't leave the country to go to her funeral because the Norwegian government held my passport. It was very hard for me.

I'm grateful for the sacrifices our grandparents made. I know that they did it because they thought of us.

In Australia, most of the veterans have passed on - but to honour what they did for our country their children and grandchildren now walk in the ANZAC parades with their medals and pictures. (The 'modern-day' veterans and military services support the parades). It is really humbling to see an army division mostly made up of grandchildren marching through the city on behalf of the grandparents.

    Thanks for your post ;)

  4. Debbie,

I'm a little late on this post but wanted to say I hold a deep sense of gratitude for every military person who serves. My son feels the Lord calling him to serve his country also.

He wants to serve in the Marines.

    Blessings to you!
