Don't Give Up!

Giving up is not an option. I want to learn that lesson ... and I want to learn it well so I don't forget.

Last week, I had a slight injury. I fell down the stairs. Or I should say ... I slipped down the stairs. My husband Greg is always warning me to hold the rail because he sees how I tend to move quickly and I'm usually doing several things at once. Like carrying things with both hands and not holding the railing. I've had a few near slips but this time ...I did it. I landed on my bottom and my camera and papers went flying. My elbow, leg and groin were hurting, along with my pride.

Take a look at these stairs. They are wood and very hard!

I learned several valuable lessons through this ordeal. Because I had to take a few days off from my regular exercise routine, I realized how easy it would be to ... just not do it. After all, exercising takes time and energy and when I took a break I had more time for other things.

Although I'm pretty consistent and have developed exercise as a habit, I don't want to take this for granted. It really is a daily choice.

The other lesson I learned is to hold the rail.

How about you? Have you made exercise a choice in your life? Have you had to come back after an injury and found it hard? I'd love to hear from you.

  1. I severly sprained my ankle a year and half ago. I was off my running routine for 3 months. I scoffed at the initial diagnosis, but the dr. was right. I wore a splint for weeks and then used it when I started back with walking. After 3-4 months, I finally found my "run" again, but I still have the effects of this terrible injury. I wear an ankle/foot sock when I run, and at night, I still use a small pillow under my foot.

On another note, and totally off the topic, I was thinking about you the other day and wanted to know if you knew anything about the "acai berry" stuff I'm seeing advertised all over the place. Does it work? Is it safe? I just wondered if you had any first hand experience with this.

I'm not a fad dieter and don't like substitutes for good, old fashioned discipline, but I sure would like to shed some weight and am struggling to do so.

Any thoughts would be welcome, and for heaven's sake, hold onto the rail girl!

  2. In my second pregnancy my doctor said I had to stay on the couch to loose weight! I had too much water retention all over my body. But I tell you what, after sitting on the couch for nine months it was so hard to start exercising again. It was like I had lost all my energy. It took me at least 5 years before I felt energised again. It's definitely not good to stop daily activity - even just walking can do wonders for your health and energy.

(I'm trying to stay motivated to continue my walks for the snowy winters - I haven't got my 'snow-feet' yet...lol... so I often walk in the wrong places and slip. But like you said, it's all about being prepared - like getting your snow clothes ready the night before and having studded shoes. When I learn how to ski I will be able to go on cross country trekks ;)

  3. I was exercising faithfully for a time period (over a year ago this happened) and woke up with a pain in my neck. I don't know what I did (or how I hurt it so badly in my SLEEP!) but it was causing so much pain I had to go to the doctor for medicine to relax my muscles. After that I got off track of exercising.

  4. Debbie,

I have herniated discs in my lower back which stopped exercising for a while. And then the whole heart thing happened for me. I have stopped exercising ~ however, I love to take a walk or go out in the boat and just be active.

And my real exercise comes in being in the Word everyday. I'm thankful I can still do that!

Blessings to you ~ and I hope your injury heals soon.

  5. Elaine- I don't have any expert opinion on the acai berry but it's supposed to be an antioxidant which is good.

l-jay- You're so right; when you stop exercising you have so much less energy. It's so hard for people to understand you get more energy when you consistently exercise.

bp- I know how easy it is to get out of the habit when you've been sidelined with an injury.

Debra- For you, going for walks is the best thing. And of course, being in the Word.

  6. I LOVE exercise and have made it a choice. I'm having a reconstructive surgery on my leg again, so I'm going to do whatever I can with free weights while recuperating.
